Pranayama breathing
Here's a simple pranayama breathing technique known as "4-7-8", that can help release tension and promote calm:
- Find a comfortable seated position with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
- Take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth, to help calm your mind and body.
- Close your mouth and inhale through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale through your mouth, making a whooshing sound, for a count of 8.
- Repeat the cycle for a total of 4 breaths.
As you practice this technique, allow your breath to become smooth and even, without forcing or straining. Focus your attention on the sound and sensation of your breath, and allow any distracting thoughts or sensations to pass without judgment or attachment. With each cycle of breath, feel your body and mind becoming more relaxed and at ease.
Now with the basics of 4-7-8 in mind, here's a short visualization to expand on this breathing technique:
As you begin to practice the 4-7-8 breathing technique, visualize a beautiful, peaceful place where you feel safe and relaxed. This could be a beach, a forest, a mountain, or any other place that brings you a sense of calm.
As you inhale through your nose for a count of 4, imagine breathing in the fresh, clean air of your peaceful place. Feel the coolness of the air as it enters your nostrils, and imagine it filling your lungs with a sense of calm and rejuvenation.
As you hold your breath for a count of 7, imagine yourself surrounded by the peaceful beauty of your chosen place. Allow yourself to be fully present in this moment, feeling the sense of relaxation and tranquility wash over you.
As you exhale through your mouth for a count of 8, imagine releasing all of the tension and stress from your body and mind. Visualize the negative energy leaving your body and being carried away by the wind or water, leaving you feeling light, peaceful, and refreshed.
Repeat this cycle of breath and visualization for several minutes, allowing yourself to sink deeper and deeper into a state of relaxation and calm. When you are ready to end your practice, take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to fully experience the peace and tranquility that you have created within yourself.
